The Miracle of the Sun (Miracle of Fátima) is a series of phenomena that occurred on October 13, 1917, in Fátima, Portugal, and was witnessed by a large crowd.
According to several stories, a crowd of 50,000 to 70,000 people assembled to witness the miracle Mary had promised, both believers and nonbelievers. Mary then “shed her light upon the sun” after coming and conversing with the children for a long time.
The previously rainy sky cleared, the clouds dispersed, and the ground, which had been moist and muddy from the rain, dried. A transparent veil fell over the Sun, making it easier to see, and multicolored lights were scattered across the countryside. This incident is called the Miracle of the sun.
How did Fátima and the Miracle of the Sun Happen?
Lucia Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto were visited by the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Cova da Iria in Fatima for the first of many times on May 13, 1917.
Mary appeared to them to be quite radiant. She wore a white cloak with a gold edging and clutched a rosary. Our Blessed Mother instructed the children to devote themselves to the Holy Trinity and the daily recitation of the rosary to conclude the First World War.
Mary prophesied an astounding miracle on October 13, 1917, in August of 1917. She then visited the children three more times before the miracle. She informed the children to pray the rosary for world peace with each apparition.
Various reports have been made about what occurred during the event. According to numerous witnesses, the dark clouds parted, and the Sun appeared as an indistinct, spinning disc in the sky after a period of rain. It was stated to be substantially duller than usual, with multicolored lights flashing across the landscape, people, and surrounding clouds.
The Sun was then said to have veered towards Earth before returning to its regular position. Witnesses said that their previously saturated clothes became “suddenly and entirely dry, as did the damp and muddy ground that had previously been soaked due to the rain that had been falling.”
Not all observers claimed to have seen the Sun “dance.” Some people saw the vibrant colors. Several people reported seeing nothing.
The old black and white picture of the actual incident shows a lot of gloomy rain clouds behind some trees with the Sun peeking through, says skeptic Brian Dunning. There is nothing exceptional about the shot, but it is, after all, a photograph. Whatever the crowd witnessed was not fascinating enough to be photographed.”
How Many Witnessed the Miracle of the Sun?
Estimates of the number of people present during the Sun’s miracle range between 50,000 and 80,000. According to Avelino de Almeida, writing for the Portuguese newspaper O Século, there were between 30,000 and 40,000 people there.
However, according to lawyer José Almeida Garrett, there were more than 100,000 people.
What did Eyewitnesses Say About the Miracle of the Sun?
The Sun trembled and made sudden unique movements outside all cosmic laws in front of the surprised eyes of the crowd, whose appearance was biblical as they stood bareheaded, intently scanning the sky—-the sun “danced” according to the traditional expression of the people.
An older man stood on the step of an omnibus. He recited the Credo in a loud voice, and his face turned to the Sun.
Identical events were replicated elsewhere, and one woman exclaimed, “How dreadful! There are even males who do not uncover in the face of such a magnificent miracle!”
People started asking each other what they had witnessed. The vast majority testified to seeing the Sun quivering and dancing; some claimed to have seen the Blessed Virgin’s face, and still, others claimed to have seen the Sun whirling on itself like a big Catherine wheel and lowering itself to the Earth as if to burn it in its beams. Some claim to have seen it change colors sequentially.
Philippe Dalleur, a priest, and philosophy professor at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome, studied crowd images taken by “O Seculo” photographer Judah Ruah. Dalleur claims there are two light sources in his shadow analysis, one of which is the “silver sun” mentioned by witnesses – but at the wrong elevation to be the Sun.
He claims that accounts from witnesses who saw the event from a distance situate the “silver sun” neither at the azimuth of the actual Sun nor at any set azimuth – but constantly in the direction of Fatima, leading him to believe that the “silver sun” was a real light object over Fatima.
Newspaper O Século reported
“The rain stopped around one o’clock in the afternoon, midday by the sun.” The sky, pearly grey in color, cast an unusual light over the vast dry countryside. The Sun was shrouded in an apparent gauzy cloak, making it easy to fixate on it.
The grey mother-of-pearl tone broke into a sheet of silver as the clouds were ripped apart, and the silver Sun, shrouded in the same gauzy grey light, was seen twirling and turning in the circle of broken clouds. Every mouth cried out, and people sank to their knees on the muddy ground.
The light changed to a magnificent blue as if it had come through the glass windows of a church and spread itself over the people who knelt with their hands outstretched.
The blue gradually faded, and the light traveled through yellow glass. Yellow stains fell across white handkerchiefs and the women’s dark skirts. They appeared on the trees, the stones, and the Serra. People grieved and prayed with their heads uncovered; they had longed for a miracle.
Was it a UFO that the people in Fátima saw?
Many people feel that what the people of Fátima witnessed was a UFO. Many people worldwide believe that the actual incident was altered by the Vatican and is not authentic.
There are other inconsistencies, such as Lucia writing the secret on a single sheet of paper. The Vatican’s version lasted four pages. According to Portuguese accounts, Lucia told them that the third secret was “in the Gospels and the Apocalypse,” specifically Apocalypse chapters 8 to 13.
As a result, many people believe the third secret did, in fact, involve an alien-led attack on Earth that will end civilization, but this is being kept a secret.
Conclusion
Today, Our Lady of Fátima is comprised of magnificent religious structures, monuments, and saint statues. Although the Chapel of Apparitions and the Basilica are the most well-known, other attractions include the Perpetual Adoration Chapel and the Monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Because there were no photographs or moving films of the Fatima event or the alleged apparition of the Blessed Mother, many people believe it was/is a meteorological phenomenon. Most people think it was a close encounter with a UFO and aliens.
